Origin

Augustus is from a cross between Jonkheer van Tets and Ribes multiflorum selected in 1963 and introduced in 1995

Cropping Season and Growth Habit

Augustus is a very late ripening variety. Later than Rovada and Roodneus picking starts in the last week of August. The plants are vigorous.

Fruit Quality

The fruit has different sizes from large to small on the strigs. Augustus is excellent for cold storage under ultra low oxygen conditions. Growers keep the fruit in cold store until the end of April, and sell them as fresh products as the strigs are still bright green. The variety is also good for machine harvesting.

Disease Resistance

Augustus is a healthy strong growing plant. So far it has shown to be resistant to American gooseberry mildew (Sphaerotheca morsuvae) and leafspot (Pseudopeziza ribis). The fruit tolerates wet conditions well.
