This is apparently a mutation to spine-less'ness in material
discovered in Buckinghamshire, which is apparently identical to the
Tayberry in every other respect.
The variety must be chimeral because the spinelessness is not
transmitted by seed. It can therefore be propagated by rooted stem
tips or in tissue culture but not in a spawn bed or by root cuttings.
It is probably a parallel situation to the spine-free (L654)
Loganberry, which was discovered some 40 years after the spiny form
was selected.
It has produced vigorous plants with stout canes and the breeder is
confident that there are no important differences from Tayberry. |
