Parentage / Origin

Cascade Dawn was selected in 1991 by Dr Pat Moore from a cross of WSU 991 and WSU 608 made at the Washington State University (WSU) Puyallup Research and Extension Center, and evaluated as WSU 1068.

Season

In trials in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) of the USA, the midpoint of harvest for Cascade Dawn was 10 days earlier than Meeker and Tulameen.

Plant Characteristics

Cascade Dawn is very vigorous, produc¬ing more and longer canes than either Malahat or Willamette. The basal portions of young canes <30 cm tall have 20 to 40 spines per cm of cane.

Fruiting Characteristics

Fruit of Cascade Dawn are large, similar in size to Tulameen, long conic in shape and glossy. The berries are firm and have an excellent fresh flavour, with a good shelf life. In trials on sites in the PNW with no obvious problems with root rot (Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi), Cascade Dawn has produced similar yields to Tulameen (Table 1). However, on sites with significant root rot infection Cascade Dawn has produced significantly higher yields (Table 2).

Pest & Disease Resistance

Cascade Dawn is susceptible to the large raspberry aphid (Amphorophora agathonica), the vector for the mosaic virus complex, but may be resistant to pollen transmission of RBDV. In unsprayed plots, the canes had a moderate incidence of spur blight (Didymella appanala), somewhat more than Cascade Delight. In the PNW Cascade Dawn has been planted in areas with high levels of root rot (Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi) and has survived well, and had good yields. Cascade Dawn is more root rot tolerant than Tulameen.

Potential Uses

Cascade Dawn has been noted for high yields of large, early season fruit with excellent fresh flavour. The fruit is long conic in shape and glossy. The fruit of Cascade Dawn does not release easily from the receptacle until almost fully ripe and does not appear to be suited for machine harvesting. It has a moderate level of root rot tolerance and may be resistant to raspberry bushy dwarf virus. Cascade Dawn is recom¬mended for fresh market uses.
