Parentage
East Malling selection 1611/150 was raised in 1977 from a cross
between a second back-cross from the North American Ribes bracteosum
and a third back-cross from gooseberry.
Cropping Season & Growth Habit
Farleigh flowers up to a week earlier than Ben Lomond but crops at
much the same time. The plants are of moderate vigour and slightly
spreading.
Fruit Quality
The fruits are large, slightly soft and borne on short, crowded
strigs. The juice is rather pale and lacks the strong blackcurrant
flavour typified by the standard Baldwin, so it is not suitable for
commercial production.
Pest & Disease Resistance
Farleigh is highly resistant to the gall mite, (Cidophyopsis ribis)
this is the first release of material of cultivar status with strong
gall mite resistance conferred by the gooseberry gene Ce. Farleigh
also has moderate resistance to American gooseberry mildew, (Shaerotheca
mors-uvae) inherited from its grandparent, the Swedish Ojebyn.
Horticultural Value
Although unsuitable for commercial juice production, Farleigh has
resistance to gall mite and mildew combined with moderate to good
yields of large fruit. It should be a welcome addition for the PYO,
organic and amateur markets. |
