Parentage
East Malling selection 1840/121 was raised in 1981 from a cross
between Ben Lomond and EM 1428/70. This selection was a hybrid between
a third back-cross from gooseberry and a second back-cross from Ribes
glutinosum.
Growth Habit and Yield
The plants are vigorous and of excellent erect habit. The original
seedling was screened in the gall mite infestation plot at East
Malling from 1982-84, where it showed considerable promise. Its yield
is moderate to good.
Fruit Quality
The medium-sized firm fruits separate readily from the fairly long
strigs and hand-picking is quick and easy. Foxendown has not been
assessed for commercial juicing.
Pest & Disease Resistance
Foxendown is highly resistant both to the gall mite, (Ccidophyopsis
ribis) through the gene Ce from gooseberry and to American gooseberry
mildew, (Shaerotheca mors-uvae) through the gene Sph3 from R.
glutinosum. It has shown moderate resistance to leafspot, (Peudopeziza
ribis) probably inherited from the highly resistant R. glutinosum. |
