Parentage / Origin

Jeanne d’Orléans, tested as SJR942-7, is a selection from a cross between ‘Meeker‘ and ‘Chilliwack’ bred in 1994 by Shahrokh Khanizadeh. It has been tested since 1997 at McGill University and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) sub-station in L’Acadie, Quebec, and in controlled semi-commercial sites by ‘Les Fraises de l’Île d’Orléans’ in l’Île d’Orléans, Quebec (latitude 46oN, longitude 71oW).

Yield & Fruit Quality

At maturity, Jeanne d’Orléans fruit releases readily from the receptacle without crumbling and has strong drupelets cohesion. Soluble solids levels are higher than those recommended for Quebec and colder climate, whereas titratable acidity is similar to ‘Killarney’ but significantly lower than ‘Boyne’, ‘Nova’ and ‘Festival’. Total yield of Jeanne d’Orléans was comparable to that of all 4 standards (‘Killarney’, ‘Boyne’, ‘Nova’ and ‘Festival’) recommended for Quebec, but fruit weight was significantly higher than controls.

Jeanne d’Orléans has an excellent shelf life compare to 4 standards and has much higher antioxidant activities especially ellagic acid (two fold higher) compared to commercially grown raspberries in Quebec.

Plant Characteristics

Young shoots are quite densely covered with purplish-brown, fairly large spines. New shoots are covered with bloom wax and moderately hairy, with an upright habit with dropping tips. The leaves are slightly but noticeably rough-surfaced between veins and are light green in colour, usually have 5 leaflets, but upper part of a shoot may have only 3.

Horticultural Value

Jeanne d’Orléans is a new late-season floricane red raspberry cultivar (Rubus idaeus L.) released by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Horticulture Research and Development Centre (HRDC). Jeanne d’Orléans was named because it has large, very firm and aromatic fruits, with excellent shelf life and much higher antioxidant activities compared to commercially grown raspberries in Quebec.
