Breeder's Description

Kalinda

Day Neutral, Large, Bright Red, Uniform Fruit

Head Licence & Worldwide Marketing Rights for UPOV Countries, excluding Australia & New Zealand held by MEIOSIS
Bred by Department of Primary Industries Victoria, Australia

Parentage

Kalinda was selected from a cross between breeding line 92-050-76 and the AVS cultivar Lowanna made in 1997 at the Department of Primary Industries - Knoxfield, Victoria, Australia, and tested under the selection number 97-101-125.

Fruit Quality

Berries are large, frequently exceeding 35 grams in size during spring. The skin is bright red in colour and moderately glossy resulting in attractive fruit, the appearance being maintained throughout the fruiting season. Berries are conic in shape with little variation between primary, secondary and tertiary fruits, and rarely produce misshapen fruit. The flesh colour is medium red throughout. The fruit are firmer than Selva and have also shown useful levels of rain resistance, and are highly resistant to powdery mildew.

The calyx is moderate in size, spreading and detaches easily. Results from grower trials over six years indicate the fruit are juicy and the flavour acceptable, but variable throughout the season and similar to Selva.

Plant Characteristics

Plants of Kalinda are of globose form, moderate density, and pathogen tested plants runner freely.

In trials in Australia, Kalinda has consistently out yielded both Selva and Lowanna when planted in late autumn. Kalinda has shown no particular susceptibility to pests and demonstrated a strong resistance to powdery mildew. Plants have a moderate chilling requirement.
