Parentage/Origin
Martlet was raised in East Sussex by Tim Sobey from mixed parentage
including Invicta. It was selected in 1987 for its fruit colour and
mildew resistance.
Fruit Quality
The skin is hairless and finely veined with strong red colour
(developing in the last 2-3 weeks of ripening). The flesh is succulent
and well flavoured. The berries have good ovate form sometimes with
slight elongation to the peduncle held on long stems. Fruit size is
classified as large.
Yield
At Brogdale the 3rd season yielded in excess of 4kgs per bush all
of sufficient minimum diameter to satisfy supermarket criteria.
Plant Characteristics
A moderately vigorous plant forming a naturally globose bush with
short internodes and short soft spines with one flower per node in
general.
Disease Resistance
Martlet has shown resistance to all the races of American
gooseberry mildew. (Sphaerotheca mors-uvae), encountered to date. It
has a high tolerance of leaf pot, (Psudopeziza ribis).
Use of Variety
The excellent dessert quality of the fruit and its strong
attractive colouration make it suitable for supply to the multiple
retailers. The strong disease resistance make it suitable for organic
culture and integrated pest & disease control. The variety seems an
obvious subject for the private garden where inoculum potential may be
high and disease control measures difficult to time effectively. |
