Floricane

Head Licence and World-wide marketing rights held by Meiosis Ltd

Bred by East Malling Research, UK
EU PVR Grant No EU14919

Parentage

Octavia was derived from Glen Ample x EM 5928/114 (family 6512) from a cross-made in 1992. The original seedling (6512/50) was selected in 1996.

Fruit Quality

The fruit is large, of uniform size, firm, cohesive, blunt and conic to round in shape. It is easily plugged and meaty with fairly good colour and good flavour. The shelf life of Octavia is good, generally better then Glen Ample and consistently much better than Tulameen.

Mean fruit weight o Octavia was intermediate between that of Glen Ample and Tulameen. The results reflect big differences between seasons, largely due to the weather. The mean fruit weights are generally more reliable than the yield figures when comparing genotypes in the Breeder’s Stage 0 trials.

Yield

Octavia was picked from a single 10-plant un-replicated plot in the Breeder’s stage 0 trials in 1999 and 2000. In 1999, which was an early dry season Octavia produced similar yields to Tulameen. In 2000 new plots of Glen Ample and Tulameen produced more fruit than an older plot of Octavia.

Season

Octavia is a very late ripening summer fruiting type cropping approximately 10 days after Glen Ample and Tulameen.

1999 was an early season while 2000 was toward average. In both years Octavia was later then Glen Ample and Tulameen, with even further season extension in 2000.

Plant Characteristics

Octavia has a reasonably good habit, it crops to the base of the canes, ahs upright, rather leafy laterals and the fruit is slightly clumped at the end of the lateral.

Pest and Disease resistance

Octavia is resistant to biotypes 1-4 of Amphorophora idaei. It is moderately resistant to cane Botrytis and cane spot but moderately susceptible to spur blight. It is susceptible to Raspberry Bushy Dwarf Virus at East Malling but has not shown leaf yellows. In a glasshouse test at East Malling, 2003, Octavia was susceptible to raspberry root rot (Phytophthora fragaria var. rubi).

Horticultural Value

Octavia will extend the summer fruiting season beyond that of Glen Ample and Tulameen and will produce fruit well into August. It will provide more of an overlap with the currant primocane fruiting cv’s. The fruit quality attributes of Octavia, especially its shelf life, will suit the fresh market.

Accreditations

The breeding of this variety  was jointly funded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), MEIOSIS Ltd and the East Malling Trust for Horticultural Research.
