Parentage
Redpoll was raised in 1974 from a cross between Red Lake and a
hybrid of the very long strig'd Far Eastern Ribes longeracemosum with
the Mediterranean R. multiflorum. This is the first material of
cultivar status with R. longeracemosum in its parentage. It was named
Redpoll in 1994.
Cropping Season & Growth Habit
Redpoll is late ripening, between one and two weeks later than
Redstart, Rondom and Rovada. The plants are vigorous and spreading and
in some sites would probably benefit from some support.
Fruit Quality
The fruits are medium-large, even sized, an attractive bright red
and borne on exceptionally long strigs with up to 40 fruits per strig.
Redpoll has not been assessed commercially for processing but small
scale tests produced a pleasant jelly.
Disease Resistance
In Kent, Redpoll has proved moderately resistant to leaf spot (Pseudopeziza
ribis). In some years, slight attacks of American gooseberry mildew (Sphaerotheca
mors-uvae), causing little damage, occurred on late developing shoots
and on fruits.
Horticultural Value
Redpoll, with its long, well-filled strigs of bright red fruit is
very attractive and would be a welcome addition for the PYO and
amateur market. Plants trained on a trellis system or double wire
produce a wonderful display of attractive strigs. |
