Parentage

Rosie was bred by Dr David Simpson and Judi Bell. It was selected in 1991 from a cross between Honeoye and an Italian seedling from ISF, Forli.

Fruit Quality

The berries have a regular conical shape, with firm skin and consistently good flavour. The fruit is very regular and attractive, with a glossy finish and darker skin than Elsanta.

Yield & Fruit Size

Yields in trials at East Malling have been similar to Honeoye and have a very low percentage of waste.

Marketing Suitability

Rosie is an early season dessert type which offers superior quality to Honeoye. Its shelf life and excellent flavour should make it suitable for all types of retail outlets, including supermarkets. The large primary berries are very symmetrical, with long stalks, and would be suitable for marketing as “stem berries” for dipping in chocolate or cream.

Plant Characteristics

Plants are moderately vigorous with good runner production.

Disease Resistance

Rosie is susceptible to powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca macularis), wilt (Verticillium dahliae) and crown rot (Phytophthora cactorum). A spray programme equivalent to that used for Elsanta is recommended.

Use of the Variety

Rosie is seen as an alternative to Honeoye for the early season. It has the advantages of a consistently good flavour and a better shelf life. The aromatic flavour will appeal to strawberry connoisseurs.
