Origin
Originates from a cross made by Peter Hauenstein between Invicta and an unknown
red strain from the Czech Republic.
Yield
Plants of Xenia have a very high yield potential.
Fruit Size
As large as Red Triumph and Winham’s Industry, averaging about 14 grams.
Fruit Quality
Attractive red colour, fairly round, few hairs.
Plant Characteristics
Plants of Xenia are strong growing, with upright or slightly drooping growth, upper
half without thorns, otherwise mostly single, weak thorns. Cropping plants of Xenia are
only slightly susceptible to powdery mildew, but non-cropping plants have to be treated
with a spray programme as other varieties.
Horticultural Value
No other variety with this early cropping season is comparable to Xenia in terms of
fruit size or growth characteristics, and this means the variety should be of particular
interest to commercial growers. Xenia would also be suitable for both domestic and
market gardens.
Other Information
The soil used by the breeder Peter Hauenstein is fairly poor with clay. Because
the growth of Xenia plants was vigorous in this ground, it is necessary to be careful
with fertilizer, especially with nitrogen. Otherwise the growth is too vigorous and
it’s possible to get problems with powdery mildew. When the plants start to
crop, vegetative growth will decrease and then it’s possible to grow with a
reduced spray-programme.
