Characteristics of Cupid

  • Exceptional disease resistance to four of the main strawberry pathogens
  • High % Class 1
  • Good fruit quality including shape & colour.
  • Suitable for growing in organic production systems
Cropping Season
Cupid is a late season variety, cropping at a similar time to Florence in the UK

Fruit Quality
Berries are very attractive, glossy, bright orange-red in colour and uniformly conical in shape. Skin has a good strength and shelf-life is good. Brix levels are usually similar to Elsanta. Cupid has the potential to produce excellent flavour.

Fruit Yield
Cupid has produced better main crop yields than Elsanta in both protected and outdoor production systems. 60-day yields have been lower than Elsanta but better than Florence and Symphony. The percentage of Class 1 berries is high with average berry size slightly smaller than Elsanta. The berries have good rain tolerance.

Plant Characteristics
Plants have vigorous growth forming a compact leafy plant. The leaf canopy provides useful protection for the fruit on outdoor sites. Fruit is well displayed for picking.

Disease Resistance
Cupid is exceptional in that it shows a useful level of resistance to the four major strawberry diseases: wilt (Verticillium dahliae), crown rot (Phytophthora cactorum), black spot (Colletotrichum acutatum) and powdery mildew (Podosphaera aphanis). Well suited to unprotected soil production systems and organic production.
