Characteristics of Pax
- Early season
- Virtually spine-free
- Good disease resistance
Early season cropping, similar to Careless.
Pax fruit is well shaped, slightly bristly, dark red when fully ripe with a moderate dessert flavour. The average fruit size of Pax is 7.4g, similar to that of Careless (7.7g).
Pax is moderately resistant to gooseberry mildew (Sphaerotheca mors-uvae) on the plant and fruit and moderately resistant to leaf spot (Pseudopeziza ribis). Pax has not displayed symptoms of gooseberry vein-banding virus in the field but it has not been deliberately inoculated by grafting.
Use of the Variety
As the most spineless European red-fruited gooseberry, Pax will appeal enormously to soft fruit producers who supply the fresh and PYO markets.
Pax is protected under Community (EU) Plant Variety Rights (Grant No: EU 4561. The propagation and sale of plants, or parts of plants, of Pax without a licence is prohibited.
